M1 Garand

Named after its designer John C. Garand, an employee of the U.S. Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, M1 Garand features a semi-automatic and gas-operated mechanism fed with eight-round en-bloc clip. At the time when it was adopted in 1936, M1 Garand was truly the most advanced firearm ever made. Although the M1 is similar in design to the Karabiner 98K, its performance is totally different.

It’s the first successful semi-automatic self-loading operation capable of firing the full-power rifle cartridge. Besides, it reduces the effects of felt recoil so as to reduce the training time for soldiers. As such, America sent the best infantry rifle to the battlefields of World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

AK-47

The well-known AK-47 was created by Mikhail Kalashnikov between 1946 and 1948 in the Soviet Union. AK-47 is officially short for Kalashnikov Automatic Rifle 1947 model or Avtomat Kalashnikov 1947 model.

The gas-operated detachable magazine-fed AK-47 features 7.62 x 39 mm, a .30-cal with selective fire capabilities, which combines the power of a traditional rifle cartridge with the fire rate and controllability of a submachine gun into an intermediate cartridge.

As for its design and manufacture, the very first AK-47 and subsequent AKM variants feature a lightweight stamped steel receiver, making the rifle manufacture cheaper, easier, and more inexhaustible in the world.

Mauser 98

Before Paul Mauser successfully made his first smokeless-powder gun and secured several patents in 1889, he failed to attempt on several bolt-action repeaters and even was rejected by the German Rifle Testing Commission.

In the next six years, Mauser made several improvements on the 1889, including a non-rotating claw extractor, a three-position safety, a staggered-column magazine, and a bolt sleeve gas flange, which was approved and adopted by the German army on April 5^th, 1898.

The Mauser 98 was so successful in design that almost all major military or sporting bolt-action models has adopted the improved version ever since. Even the U.S. Springfield Armory improved the Model 1903 to be a combat bolt-action gun on the basis of Mauser 98.

Lee-Enfield

Lee-Enfield used the bolt and magazine system designed by American inventor James Paris Lee and its predecessor was the .303 “Magazine Lee-Metford Rifle Mk I.” Of all the SMLE production, the 25.2-inch barreled “Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield” and the variants like Mk III and Mk III* were adopted by cavalry and infantry.

The Lee-Enfield features dual-opposed locking lugs towards the rear center of the bolt body and a separate, detachable bolt head, a closing action cocks, a short bolt travel length, and a 60-degree bolt throw. While the SMLE adopted a detachable, double-column, and a box magazine of 10 round capacity. During the World War I, the well-trained British riflemen fired the Lee-Enfields so fast that the Germans thought there were facing machine guns.

Later, a new rifle No. 4s were created with changes in receiver, bolt, sights, barrel, stock, nose cap, and bayonet.

AR 15

AR-15, AR-10, and other variants are the second most commonly designed rifles after the AK-47.
